Plan Your Perfect Trip to Lefkada

We can help you plan your perfect trip to Lafkada here at Epicure Greece. We are no strangers to Greek ferries; all-in-all, we have probably spent months of our lives sitting at a Goodys on the Blue Star Delos. When it comes to making your way to Lefkada, however, forget the stress of catching a flight or reaching the port in time; forget waiting in long queues, crowded airports, or barging your way onto ferries…. the passage from mainland Greece to Lefkada, via the island’s floating bridge, takes about one minute! If you have any more questions about how to get to Lefkada, please get in touch.

The appeal of the Greek island of Lefkada is the nature, with a truly stunning coastline. Lefkada is nicknamed ‘the Caribbean of Greece’ due to its fabulous array of magnificent beaches. While you can’t really go wrong with Lefkada’s beaches, we especially recommend you check out Porto Katsiki, Egremni, and Mylos. Take a look at our entire range of Greek holiday destinations to start plotting your larger, island-hopping adventure.

11Egremni Beach

Egremni Beach

Another gorgeous beach with pristine waters (and it’s a sandy beach so there’s no awkward clambering out of the sea ha!). Egremni Beach is accessible only by boat from the villages of Nydri and Vasiliki.

11Lefkada Town

Lefkada Town

As the capital of the island, Lefkada Town is the administrative, economic, and cultural centre of Lefkada. Located at its north-eastern side, Lefkada Town has a population of about 8,000 inhabitants who are mostly engaged in agriculture and tourism.

11Mylos Beach

Mylos Beach

14km south of Lefkada town, Mylos isn’t as crowded as other beaches in Lefkada, because it takes some effort to reach it. But, like most things in life, you appreciate things you have to work for and you will definitely love this stunner! To enjoy the tranquil crystal-clear waters, you can take a water taxi or Agios Nikitas or, if you have some energy, brave the 15-minute hike down to the beach.

A WALK THROUGH LEFKADA’S HISTORY

Lefkada, one of the 7 Ionian Islands, took its name from the “Cape of Lefkata. There are two versions of the origin of this name. One version says that the name comes from the white colour of the cape’s rocks. The other version says that the name comes from Lefko, a friend of Odysseus. Find out more about our range of Holidays in the Ionian Islands.

In Antiquity, the “Cape Lefkatas” was famous. According to tradition, anyone who jumped from the rocks could escape the torment of love. The region had this status because Zeus used to have a rest there, between his love adventures. Sappho jumped from the cape because she wanted to relieve herself of her love for Phaon. Also, the Goddess Aphrodite chose to end her life this way after she discovered that Adonis, her love, had died. And later on, even the Romans followed this “tradition”.

Another tradition is associated with the temple of Apollo, which is situated in the region. According to the myth, once a year, the people living in Lefkada had a ceremony to purify the city. They threw a convict from the rock in order to prevent evil from taking over the city.

MARABOO BEACH BAR

Maraboo beach bar with its panoramic view of Scorpios, Madouri and Agios Kiriaki against the background of the deep Ionian blue will win you over. It’s a proper Ibiza-style beach club and we definitely dig the vibe.

PORTO KATSIKI

Lefkada’s most famous beach and undoubtedly the crown jewel of the island’s remarkable coast is Porto Katsiki (honestly, it’s the best of a GREAT bunch). Steep cliffs meet the pebbled shore and exotic, cyan waters.

LEFKADA’S VILLAGES

We love spending time in Lefkada’s gorgeous villages with their welcoming residents, which can even make you forget that you’re even on a Greek island. It’s a world away from the beach bums. We highly recommend taking a break for a bit of tsipouro under the shady plane trees in the village square of Karya. It’s good for the soul. If you’re in the market for what might be the best view in the whole of the Ionian sea (big claim? Yes it is, but go and see what you think!) head to Exanthia. According to local lore, its name refers to the six families (the name means literally “six flowers”) who founded the village centuries ago, and the village, built like an amphitheater, feels like one dreamlike balcony with Views. To. Die. For.

11Speciality

Best Local Specialty in Lefkada

SAVORO

Savoro is a fish that has been marinated in a mixture of vinegar, oil, rosemary, garlic, and raisins. As you can imagine, that is one pungent collection of ingredients(!) but it is one that will definitely stick in your mind for a long, long while.

11Sight

Best Sight in Lefkada

DIMOSSARI WATERFALLS

Situated near the village of Nidri, the Dimossari Waterfalls (also known as Nidri Waterfalls) is a little paradise of greenery, perfect for refreshing dips on hot summer days. The waterfall ends in a lake with spectacular rocks. You can easily reach it from Nidri by following the signs and by walking through the gorge for roughly 30 minutes before reaching the cascading waters. It’s well worth the trouble: a perfect tranquil haven!

DE BLANCKK

De Blanckk in Nidri is a wine lover’s paradise, run by a Danish couple who fell in love with Lefkas Island after 12 years of holidaying here. They always had a passion for wine, and after 7 years in the business of sourcing the best wines from around the country, what Bob and Anja don’t know about Greek wine isn’t worth knowing!
