The first traces of life on the island of Rhodes are lost in the fog of myth. The first inhabitants are said to have been the native Heliades, children of the protective god Helios and Clymene the Oceanid, and the Telchines, a strange kind of people who supposedly resembled demons. The Mediterranean island of Rhodes formed the base for the Knights of St John from 1306 until the capture of the island by the Ottoman Turks in 1522. The armor they left behind on Rhodes was discovered in the middle of the nineteenth century.
The Old Town is a medieval city constructed within a castle with six gateways. Rhodes, with its reinforced city walls, is one of the few medieval towns which is still in good condition and is registered with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Strolling on the stone pavements you will marvel at the buildings of the Knights, trenches, and fences enclosed within the city walls, churches, mosques, palaces, squares, gardens and courtyards of the houses. Furthermore, the castle houses many souvenir shops, tavernas, stores and jewelers in what was once called the Old Market.
Lindos offers two different beaches actually, sharing the same bay. There are sunbeds and umbrellas everywhere, and the beaches are well occupied, but not necessarily crowded.
As one of the greatest places on the island, the village of Lindos is well-known for its picturesque Acropolis and the dramatic natural landscape which is enhanced by the picturesque quality of the town built in a more recent past. 5000 years of history and human life are waiting to be explored here – a whole day and evening may not be enough!
Its name in Greek means the green island. It’s a magical spot at one of the most southern spots of the island. Prasonisi is basically a small island united with the land by a very narrow line of sand essentially forming two beaches. Due to the strong winds, this beach is well-known as a paradise for kitesurfers.
One of the most charming destinations on Rhodes, Seven Springs (Epta Piges) offers a cool, magical landscape, a real oasis, crystal clear waters, lush trees and hidden trails. Water flows out of the springs all year round, which forms a small lake, which is perfect for swimming.
It is very difficult to choose just one place on an island of that size. Most people believe it’s an island where fast food is the first choice and frozen mousakas are served on every corner.
